2. H.M. Schey, Div, Grad, Curl, and All That: An Informal Text on Vector Calculus, 3rd
Edition, Norton
RESERVE LIST: A reserve list will be set up for Physics 4C in the Undergraduate Library.

Young, University Physics, 8th edition
COURSE FORMAT:
A detailed course schedule will be handed out and posted on the class web site; this schedule and the assignments may be adjusted as the quarter proceeds. Appropriate notes of any significant changes will be posted on the class web site and on the boards outside WLH 2126. Lectures will, in general, follow the text. You should make every effort to read the text covering the material to be discussed in lecture BEFORE the lecture, as this will greatly help your understanding of the material.
HOMEWORK:
Homework will be assigned each week. It will not be collected for grading, and does not count towards the final grade. However, doing the homework is essential to understanding the material covered in lecture, and for doing well on the quizzes. To fully understand the material, you should work out most of the problems on your own, without help of the solution key. Study groups are often extremely valuable, but again be sure you also work out problems yourself. Problems will be discussed in both the discussion and problem sessions. Solutions will be posted on the class web site.
QUIZZES:
Eight 50 minute closed book quizzes will be given. You may bring a calculator and a single sheet of 8.5"x11" paper (two sides if you wish) of formulae and values of constants (these will not be provided). You are expected to know the material covered in Physics 4A and B. Quizzes will consist of problems modeled after homework, examples in the text, or problems and demonstrations discussed in lecture. Your overall quiz grade will be computed from the best 6 of the 8 quizzes. Two quizzes can therefore be used for absences without penalty. There will be no make-up quizzes; quizzes missed due to illness, death in the family, participation in UCSD sponsored activities, job requirements, etc. must count as dropped quizzes. If you anticipate missing more than two quizzes due to unavoidable circumstances, you must discuss this with Prof. Hellman before the missed quizzes or as soon as possible in the case of illness.
On the day of the first quiz, you will be assigned a random 3-digit number as your code number. Students are required to purchase bluebooks for quiz taking; you should write the course number and your code number (not your name) on the cover of each bluebook you purchase. Graded quizzes will be returned at the following quiz (on Friday); quizzes not retrieved will be returned to the quiz return room, WLH 2126. Open hours for this room will be announced the first week of class. Recorded grades will be posted by code number on the boards outside WLH 2126. Please be sure to check your posted grade against that on your quiz to make sure your grade has been recorded correctly. After each quiz, solutions will be posted, and will also be available on the class web site. Appeals of grading of quizzes must be made in writing to the TA within 1 week of the return of the quiz (see note below).
FINAL EXAM:
The final exam will be on Friday, December 8, 8:00 - 11:00 a.m., location to be announced. It will not be possible to take the exam early. The final examination will be closed-book. You may bring two 8.5"x11" sheets of paper (four sides if you wish) of formulae etc. and a calculator Your student I.D. is required to take the final exam.
GRADING:
Quizzes 67% and Final Exam 33%. The best 6 of 8 quizzes count towards the final grade. Appeals of grading of quizzes must be made in writing to the TA. Appeals of grading of the final should be addressed in writing to the instructor. In all cases, do not ever write directly on the graded quiz or exam. Instead, attach a sheet of paper with an explanation of why you are appealing the grade (be specific). Regrades for other than incorrect addition of points by the TA will only be considered for quizzes and exams written in pen (not pencil). Regrades must be requested within one week of the return of the quiz or exam.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:
Please read the UCSD Policy on Integrity of Scholarship in the 2000 - 2001 General Catalog. These rules will be rigidly enforced. Any confirmed case of cheating will result in an "F" grade in Physics 4C and referral to the appropriate dean for disciplinary action. For all quizzes/exams cheating includes: submitting another person’s work as your own for grade consideration, any alteration of a graded quiz or exam for reconsideration, copying from another student or knowingly allowing another student to copy from you, or the use of any unauthorized materials during the exam or quiz.
