UCSD physics graduate Student Jonathan Kaufman was recently awarded the Antarctica Service Medal of the United States of America, authorized by Congress in recognition of his contributions to exploration and scientific achievement under the U.S. Antarctic Program. Jonathan Kaufman, working under Prof. Brian Keating, recently completed his third season at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica working on the BICEP2 telescope--currently leading the search for evidence of the inflationary expansion of the early universe, believed to have occurred in the fractions of a second immediately after the Big Bang.
